Hopped up Christmas cookies and cocoa

Last year, while waiting up for Santa, we busted out the Photo Booth and had some Christmas fun.

I might've promised these would never see the light of day, but it's been long enough now that I can't really remember if I actually DID make that promise... so it doesn't count, right?

Merry Christmas from me to you!

My body hates me

Most days, not too much happens to me. I usually go to work, read some emails, make calls and appointments... grab a drink with my friends after work... chill around my house, annoy my dog (or he annoys me) and watch some tv... then bed. Pretty standard (read: boring).

But recently, my routine has been thrown off by the fact that I was buying a house (which happened today). Meaning, I'm moving in like 2 days. And given my familiar experiences with moves and how many of your favorite things can break during a move, I know how important it is to pack up carefully.

So imagine my disdain, when I woke up this morning to really sharp pain in my shoulder and the inability to raise my left arm more than a few inches. My first panic: OHMYGOD - MY HAIR! Yes, it's true. I'm rocking bed hair today because I can't reach my head. (Thankfully, I was able to brush my teeth with the other hand). My second panic: OHMYGOD - I'M MOVING! AND STILL NEED TO FINISH PACKING!

This is mutiny. I told my shoulder that I'm really busy and have an extremely hectic schedule... but it doesn't care. My body hates me and is basically demonstrating the very worst timing possible.

I can't say that I'm overly surprised by this shoulder thing - to be honest, it's been getting gradually worse for about a month. I was blaming my bed (and used it as a handy excuse to buy a new one on Black Friday), but I don't think that's the culprit anymore. And I got a massage on Friday and asked the therapist to focus on my shoulder... so I'm hoping that didn't make things worse either.

I've self-diagnosed via WebMD, so I'll test my theory this afternoon when I go see Dr. McDreamy. I only called him that because his real name is weird and to protect my own privacy. And because he's handsome.

Ugh, the ups and downs of life.

Currently...

Obsessing over: My new house. Moving into it. Decorating it. Throwing parties in it. Cleaning it. Loving it.

Working on:
As of RIGHT THIS SECOND, I'm working on charging my iPhone so that I can use it on my long run. I bailed last week. And the week before that. Tonight, I'm making 8 miles my bi-atch.
Thinking about: What it means to be a family. The holidays always get me thinking about what really matters. I'm old enough that the thought of presents under the tree doesn't really jazz me up (ok, ok... it does a little!); it's anticipating spending lots of time with people I really care about, warm fires, yummy meals, sharing laughs and memories... My family includes people I'm related to by blood and others I'm related to by choice... and Christmas is a blast with all of them.

Anticipating: I'm anticipating the closing of my house (Dec. 14th can't get here soon enough!), my sister's birthday (the 18th), the return of a certain someone to the mainland, and CHRISTMAS of course! I'm also a big fan of New Year's - and my birthday right after that. It's a busy couple of months around here.

Listening to: Copeland. I like to mellow out to pretty music at the end of the day. But like I said, as soon as my iPhone charges, I'll be jamming out to my "Running" playlist... which includes such artists as Kelly Clarkson, Ace of Base, Weezy Baby, Michael Jackson, Limp Bizkit, Britney Spears, Junior Boys, Queen... it's an eclectic mix.

Drinking: water. Lots of water. I had too many coffees this morning during my 5 a.m. drive to Dallas. I'm wigging out.

Wishing: that I had more answers. I'm just doing the best I can in the meantime.

How about you? What are you up to today?

Oops... I did it again.

(Oh, Britney)

I've been one crazy lady lately... neglecting my leetle blog in the meantime. Sorry bout that.

But I'm back.

Saturday, Tiff and I did the David Gardner's Diamond Dash to try and win a $10,000 diamond ring. It was a scavenger hunt around campus. Despite a valiant effort (and rusty map skills), we didn't win, but we had an awesome time. And got quite the workout riding bikes all over the place for 2 hours.

Why do events always order one million XL shirts and 4 small shirts?! Of course, they were out by the time we got there... so another oversized shirt that will never see the light of day :-/

I've been keeping up with the running... training for my first half marathon has been no joke. And when I say I've been "keeping up", I actually fell behind this weekend. I skipped my 8 mile run on Sunday. But it was raining. And it was Sunday. God didn't want me to run.

I also have been in the trenches of the house-buying process. From looking at properties, to the bidding war, inspections, etc. etc... I think we're finally in the home stretch. Won't close for a few more weeks to give the current residents a chance to find new digs, but I love it. And I think about it every day.

Here's what the outside looks like:

(Sorry for the tiny pic, but it's from the realtor's site)

The rest of my live is kind of the usual stuff... loving the pup, working hard for the (12th) man, hanging with my sister (who is also the newest President of the forensic club at Sam Houston! Congrats), and daydreaming all the daydreams I like to daydream.

Note: I was making an A&M joke with the 12th Man thing. For the 1,000th time, I DO NOT work for the 12th Man Foundation; I work for the A&M Foundation. Academics. Brains, not brawn. And no, I really can't get you tickets to the game. Unless I want to sit with you and kiss you when we make a touchdown. Then I might be able to.

The next couple of weeks for me involve buying as many gadgets and gizmos for my new house on Black Friday, tackling my Christmas list and packing/unpacking my life before the new year.

Friends and family - be looking for my Christmas wish list on here soon! :) :) :)
If you love me, that is.

Instead of blogging

You know how when you haven't called your mom in a long time, and you know she's going to be mad at you for letting so much time pass between phone calls, so you dread calling her and you don't and it gets even longer and then you REALLY don't want to call...?!? (No? Just me?)

That's what has happened with this blog.

I could say that I've been bored and haven't had anything to blog about lately, but that would be an absolute lie. The truth is, I've been having the MOST fun... and just haven't taken the time to tell anyone about it. Besides, everyone who probably cares was there.

Well maybe except my Nana. And since she is one of my [only] loyal readers, I should probably update her. (Hi Nana! Love you!)

So basically, I've been...

~ running a lot. Maybe not a lot to you, but definitely a lot to me. I finished a 5K this weekend in 30:56... I was so proud of myself! All because I'm training for a half marathon next year. More on that later.

~ living it up in Dallas. Work, play, play, a little more work, and a tiny bit more play. I'm quite fond of that place these days.

~ drinking lovely wines, cooking and eating yummy foods, and slowly but surely depleting my hard-earned foreign dark chocolate stash. Looks like I need to plan another trip to Paris, Italy and/or Spain to replenish. [ahem, travel buddies?]

~ spending the best days and nights with my friends - and family. And friends that feel like family. And my families who are my best friends.

~ snuggling Bandit all the time. He's just so cute. And snuggly. [But he does get booted to the foot of the bed when he starts wiggling around and licking me in the face at 3 a.m.]

~ tailgating and cheering for my Aggies. It's up and down... but I love 'em. Especially in the first half.

~ making plans. To travel, to skydive [yes! it's really happening!], to explore. This is a really exciting time.

~ car shopping. My beloved Envoy - Little Black to those who know her - is on the fritz. She's at the shop today hopefully getting right with God, but if not... I'm on the prowl for her replacement. Not going to lie, I'm going to cry if I have to get rid of her...

~ house browsing. I. Sold. My. Land. wowie wowie, I can't believe it. But it went through, the deal is done, and Papa Dave and Momma have a new neighbor. And I'm looking to find a casa for me and the pup sometime soon. I'm nervous though. I thought I'd have a handy man around by the time I got old enough for this stuff!  :-/

~ daydreaming. Lots of daydreaming.

That's about all I feel like divulging. Some things must be kept to myself... as soon as you talk about them, they disappear, ya know?

Recent thoughts that prove I'm getting OLD...

~ When asked “where is the after-party?!” my first thought was: “The only place I’m going after this is home to take off my makeup and these shoes. Have fun.”

~ When receiving a speeding ticket, my thought wasn’t “oh crap, a fine!” my first thought was: “Oh CRAP – my insurance!

~ When texted to go out to the bars at 11:30 p.m., my first thought was: “Wah… where am I? Is it morning yet?” (I had already fallen asleep. Granted, after 3 glasses of wine at Messina Hof, but still.”

~ When shopping and considering new jeans and shoes, my first thought was: “Do I REALLY want this or should I put this money in my IRA?

~ When my friend asked me to dog-sit for the weekend, my first thought was: “Hmmm… I just shampooed the carpets. I hope he’s potty trained.

~ When one of my friends got pregnant, my first thought was NOT: “Oopsie. Who’s the dad?” (Thank goodness for this!)

~ When my phone rings with an unrecognized number, my first thought wasn’t “Stalker!” my first thought was: “Hold on, I have to take this. Business call.

It’s true; I’m getting old. Gracefully. And I don’t care what you say, I like it. Still just the right amount of fun, just the right amount of real world. These are the days!

Flashback Viral Vids

I have no idea what got me thinking about it, but I started thinking about the viral videos I used to love.

Maybe it was the banana phone I saw while out vintage shopping with Tiffany. Maybe it was a text from my bestie Jessica while I was eating an apple with peanut butter. I don't know why it happened, but it did.

And I'm so glad. I almost forgot about these annoying, fantastic little gems. Shared here in order of frequency I've viewed them.

Banana Phone. Fun to sing when the phone is ringing. And when eating bananas.

Whistle Tips. So delightfully quotable.

End of the world. Also a fantastic spice to sprinkle into conversations randomly. And sadly, much of my understanding of the nuclear arms race I learned from this video.

And my VERY FAVORITE...

Peanut butter jelly time!!! My best friend Jessica and I (for unknown reasons) played this song before any test in college. It was our "hype-up" song. We choreographed moves. We sang it acapella. We really took this viral video to the next level. (And we graduated with pretty awesome grades).

Ahhh... That was fun.

They say everything comes back eventually. But I won't let these videos die to give them a chance to come back. I love 'em.

Hope you have a peanut butter jelly time day tomorrow!

Snoozed and loozed :(

I recently became a member of a new crazy-awesome-deal site called ideeli. I love it. Clothes, jewelry, shoes, handbags and home stuff. (If you want to join, let me know and I'll invite you!)

One of the items I was scoping on there was a set of steel kitchen knives. If you know me, you know I'm a recent cooking convert. I really, really like it! And I've never had kitchen knives, so these were awesome...

CulinHome Melrose Knife Set. Regular $90 on sale for $45.

So I saw them yesterday, really liked them, saw the sale ended tonight, and decided to sleep on it.

I slept. I dreamt of these knives. I imagined all the wonderful things I could chop, slice, dice and mince with them. So I logged in to make them MINE.

AND THEY WERE SOLD OUT! Wahhhhhh.....

Frugality bites me again. I'm bummed.

Lesson: Spend immediately and spend often ;)

Just kidding. But seriously, I'm on the prowl for a good deal on a knife set (And cutting board. And juicer. And pots and pans). Hook a sista up.

Sunday Funday

From Saturday Funday, with my sis, her bf and his cousin.

Today is going to be a busy day... and I got up at 7:30 meaning to get an early start at it, but then It Could Happen to You was on E!, so I watched that. And took a little nap afterward on the couch. And made some breakfast (oatmeal with blueberries and cinnamon). And synched my iPhone 4. Basically, I procrastinated until noon. (Oh yeah, and blogged about what I needed to do instead of doing it :-/ )

So now, I'm off to the gym to get in some weights and a little cardio. I'm going on vacation (again) next week to California for a family reunion, so I'm trying to get in some sweat-time before I go. I found a new workout that looks fun in fitness magazine here. Sometimes I hate doing the workouts in magazines because they look so complicated, that I'll feel dumb trying to figure them out in the gym... but these are all pretty simple moves that I can do without having a trainer help me.

The rest of my day will be spent cleaning up before I leave (I hate coming home to a messy house), doing laundry and packing for my trip, picking up my rental car for work - I'm headed Dallas Monday and Tuesday for some meetings - anddddd... I have dinner plans.

Whew. I think the nap is going to be crucial to getting through this day.

Hope you're having a glorious weekend - happy Sunday!

Delicious and nutritious...

After my vacation, where I enjoyed lots of "kid snacks" like kettle corn, snocones, chex mix, burgers and cookies (nbd) - I was anxious to get back in the kitchen and prepare some tasty, good-for-me meals.

My parents used to try to FORCE me to learn to cook... I totally rebelled.
Now, I love it!

And boy did I! This week I've been cooking up some yum-gasmic eats that are packed with the stuff my body needs to stay energized and strong, while being magically delicious. I get lots of ideas and recipes from my old standbys Self and SHAPE magazine, but I recently started reading a really great blog Fitnessista that has lots of new meals (and vegan/gluten-free options if that's your deal. It's not mine. I love MEAT and GRAINS).

One night, after getting from the gym a little later than usual and hungry for a quick meal, I made a little pico/guac/pineapple/shrimp cocktail that was fan-freakin-tastic. I just got a deli-fresh package of pico de gallo (medium spicy for me), an avocado, some fresh pineapple chucks and a bag of frozen shrimp. Defrost and boil the little shrimpies (takes, 4 or 5 minutes) and mix it all up! I ate mine with some tortilla chips with flax seeds = devine. Light, satisfying and oh-so-summery.

Sorry for my crappy photos. I'm just not a photographer. Period.

Last night, I made the massaged kale salad via Fitnessista. I adjusted her recipe just a little since I'm out of soy sauce (I used hoisin sauce) and I don't know what "agave" is. I also left it in the fridge for a couple hours while I went to happy hour with some friends, but it was perfection when I got home. So good I wasn't even jealous of Tiffany's Crunchwrap Supreme, haha!

This morning, I enjoyed another Fitnessista favorite, the breakfast cookie. I made it last night before heading to bed, so it was ready to go when I got back from my morning run. I can't believe this thing is good for you, it's so indulgent and sweet. It really tastes like a cookie! I had some eggs and salsa with it as well.

Source: Fitnessista

Needless to say, I've been eating good in the neighborhood and feeling awesome. It really is true that your body feels better when you treat it well and fuel it right.

Any other great recipes that are quick, easy -- and good for a few days of leftovers? I live by myself... mama's gotta keep the leftovers ;)

Recap: 4th of July Weekend

I love 4th of July! It's the epitome of summer: sun, fun, friends, grills... basically all my favorite things.

Oh yeah, and the celebration of America's independence. Which I also love.

(However, I wish more of those Brits had settled here or would come over... who doesn't love a British accent?!)

This year I had an especially fantastic Fourth, because I spent it with my family in Florida. (Wow, there is some serious alliteration happening in that sentence). My brothers Chad and Conor make everything more exciting, and this weekend was no exception.

Tiff and I spent 5 days in Panama City Beach, but our July 4th was spent canoeing the Econfina Creek - which is home to like a bajillion natural springs. Which makes it a very COLD creek. And very clear. And very beautiful.

Launching our canoes

I have beast arms now from rowing all 3 or 4 miles of it. I like to call them "souvenirs".

Parentals

The canoe of "kids"

Loading up onto the scariest bus ever after the canoe trip

Zonked out. Completely.

Sadly, Conor couldn't come with us, because we were afraid of how natural springs + cold, cold water + canoes + shenanigans would end for the little guy. After our adventures, though, we rushed home to him - and not MORE importantly, but also importantly, to fire up the grill.

After some delish burgers, corn on the cob, potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans and WATERMELON (I love watermelon), we headed to the beach to watch the fireworks. There are lots of places that had "official" fireworks, but we went the "unofficial, more variety/danger/fun/ease, less crowded" route and watched all the people who spent their kids' college savings on fireworks light up the sky. They were right above our heads! Which was truly patriotic when they exploded too close to the ground. Really conjured up the experience of being a revolutionary. I've never felt more American.

One of my favorite American girls.

Celebrating the 4th on the beach.

Started building sand castles. Then switched to building bomb shelters.

The whole crew.
P.S. - my dad is an active duty service member. USAF. I'm so proud of him and so thankful for his commitment to our country. Love you, SMSgt McCann!

Anyway, more to come on the full weekend spent in paradise with my lovely family. For my USA friends, I hope you had a great, safe, holiday and took a moment to remember the historical significance and very current responsibilities of FREEDOM!

God bless the USA.

XOXO,

More loot in my loft…

This weekend I went home to my mom and stepdad’s house, and while I was there, I wanted to find a box in the storage shed of books Tiffany and I had. My brother Chad is about the age to enjoy them, so I wanted to bring them to him when we visit in July.

Sadly, I couldn’t find that box ANYWHERE. Boohoo.

But I found lots of other cool junk.

Among my haul, I brought home:
  • The cutest little round suitcase. Bittersweet fact: it still had its last checked bag tag on it, from Frankfurt, Germany to Chicago, Illinois. It helped us move when my parent divorced. I think I should take it with me on a FUN trip to boost its karma.

  • These two bear piggy banks. One was mine, one was Tiffany’s. They are SO DORKY, but I love them. Mine had a parrot on its shoulder, Tiffany’s has an owl.

  • I also found my porcelain dolls from my great-grandma McCann. I brought them inside and repacked them safely and spent some time thinking about what a special lady she was. I can’t wait to pass those dolls on to my own little girl someday.

  • But… the MOST entertaining thing I found was some old books from the 1960s.

I bought one at a library sale, but most were my stepdad’s. My book is called Here’s to you, Miss Teen and is chock-full of etiquette and “finishing” advice for young women. It’s hilarious. My favorite is the section on selecting undergarments, especially “For those with ample bosoms” – HAHA.

And the winner is: a how-to book on parenting from 1967. This book would be OUTLAWED today by how politically incorrect it is.

I seriously cracked up, out loud, by myself when I saw this little pic:

The caption? “Silliness is usually just a phase.”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

And whatever. Silliness is a way of life.

Memory lane was fun! And I urge you to salvage things and keep them safe for years to come. What seems like junk now, you might one day treasure. And your kids will definitely treasure those little tokens of your past.

(I need more shelf space).

Happy Monday... I mean Tuesday!

I hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend! I sure did. Minus the air conditioner on the fritz. I felt like I was melting, m-e-l-t-i-n-g.....

But Tiffany was a gem and let me and Bandit stay over. It was fun; like visiting/living together/old times.

Speaking of Bandit, I miss the guy. After almost 4 days of hanging out, I'm going through withdrawals today at work.

Gah, I just love his little dog face.

Have a great (short) week!

Cook once, eat for days...

Last week, I made the BEST quinoa I've ever had. And I've had alot of quinoa... but this was really good. And I made enough on Sunday night that I had quinoa with my tilapia, with my turkey salad, and my fajitas (from Tiffany) all week!

Here is the recipe: Mushroom and Walnut Quinoa. And as a side note, I used almonds - because that's what I had. And yes, I tried it with the fried egg and THAT was delicious too. Basically, I think you could eat this mushroom quinoa with anything, every day, always. It's love.

Oh - and if you've never had quinoa (pronounced "keen-wah"), try it for heck's sake! Quinoa is kind of like a grain; technically it's a psuedocereal. My favorite part of quinoa is that when you cook it, the germ separates from the seed and it looks like a little curly-que on the seed! Dorky, I know. You can treat quinoa like rice... it's prepared much the same way, and pairs with lots of things well just like rice is. I've never tried to sweeten quinoa like a cereal, but it might be worth a shot too.

Happy eating, friends.

Daily Photo: Working Girl

Before starting this post, I thought for a long time about what I wanted to write about how I feel right now. And the truth is, I don't know what to say. I feel... jumbled. The last week has been an emotional rollercoaster in so many ways - and I plan on talking more about what's been going on when I figure out how to. But for right now, the only thing that really helps is focusing on work. I've got some important meetings lined up and some goals to reach before the end of June, so that's where I'm spending my energy right now.

For those who have been around and offered condolences and/or a sympathetic ear - thank you. Your love and support has really made a difference.

Road Rules to Live By

I hate packing. And unpacking. But mostly packing. The organization. The fear of leaving something important. The preplanning of what to wear. Ewww.

Last weekend, as I was relaxing and enjoying my Sunday evening before I started a little trip to Dallas, I started panicking around 11 p.m.

Oh no! I still hadn’t packed! I was going to be up all night putting stuff together. Why had I waited so long?!?!

But then I got busy and surprisingly, was done in about 20 minutes.

I still dread packing, but I’d forgotten that my years of traveling for work and pleasure have made me quite the efficient packer. Here are some of my tips for getting in, getting out and getting on with the trip as quickly as possible.

One: Start with a good bag. Seriously. A suitcase with the right pockets, straps, wheels, size and weight for you will make your life SO MUCH EASIER. Trust me. Invest in a bag that meets your needs.

Two: Have a ready-to-go toiletry case. Yes, this means you’ll have to buy 2 of your favorite products, but it’s absolutely worth it to have a case of (dry) get-ready items to just throw in the suitcase. No forgetting stuff because you needed it to get ready on the day-of. And be realistic about the products you really need. Am I really going to deep condition my hair or use a clay mask while I’m traveling for work? Probably not. Leave it at home.

Three: Make your clothes do double-duty. I plan to wear pants at least twice on a trip. This saves time, space and the post-trip laundry pile. Seriously, bring different tops to mix things up. And try to bring as few shoes as possible. For work, I stick with one pair of heels and my gym shoes. Done. (Probably TMI, but I do always bring more underwear than I need. I just feel better having plenty. But they don’t take up much room, so I don’t worry about it too much!)

Four: Don’t forget your chargers! If you charge your device during the night, then charge it next to your suitcase, so you’ll be sure the throw it in your bag before you leave. If you don’t have to charge it immediately before you leave home, go ahead and throw device and charger in. And once you’re at the hotel, charge all your electronics in the same area… it makes rounding things up when you’re repacking a lot easier.

Five: Bring your most versatile accessories – and NEVER bring your prized jewels and heirloom pieces. It’s just way too risky. The goal is to balance your fashion needs with your practical needs… and if you’ve ever left a beloved pair of earrings or ring in the hotel, never to be “found” again by housekeeping, then you know what I’m talking about.

Packing is always a chore, but hopefully we can all become a little better – and lighter – when traveling. Besides, I never regret unused space in my suitcase; I just think of it as room for new things I may pick up out on the road!

Twitterpated

This morning is dreary and cold and cloudy and yucky. NOT my idea of a Spring day.

On a day when I'm wearing a sweater and wishing I'd also brought a coat, I WISH I were wearing this:

Spring

Florals are feminine. And flirty. And fun.

In the season of budding flowers and romance, who doesn't love that?

What are you dying to wear as soon as the weather "springs" up?

Growing my green thumb

Not to be redundant, but I'm in love with spring right now. The sun! The birds! The green things!

Except, every time I adopt a green thing, it doesn't take long for it to turn into a brown, crispy, crunchy, dead thing. Wah.

I'm the house plant murderer. The flower killer. Even my cactus - the hardiest plant on the face of the Earth - died.

But I want green things in my life. Solution? I'm attending a Holistic Gardens Spring Plant Fair at Texas A&M this Saturday. They're teaching people all about plants, holistic gardening, selling plants... and basically answering the call of nature for people like me.

If you're local, come join me! From 8-3 at the Horticulture Building on campus. If you're not around here -- I'll get answers to any questions you have.

For more information on the Fair, check out the Horticulture Club's website here.

Get outside and do something!

Hello, Spring.

Oh my gosh... it's been a really long time since I blogged. Mostly because... well... I have been busy. And finishing up hibernating for the winter. But now it's SPRING!

And I couldn't be happier.

My goals for this Spring:

* Channel my inner cook. There is so much lovely produce right now. And so many delicious things to be whipping up in the kitchen. I've been hesitant to really dive into cooking because I live alone... but I'm so over that excuse. Besides, I love a good leftover lunch :)

* Get new bedding. I love my flannel sheets, but after waking up two night in a row with the blankets on the floor from overheating, it's time to lighten up the linens.

* Make my new gym home. I changed memberships... for a few reasons. One of which is that my new gym is closer to home and open longer hours. And has fewer college students. Which means I'll spend less time waiting on machines and checking my hair in the mirrors and more time getting fit.

* Take more pictures. I got a new camera! I thought my old one was broken, so I bought a new one. Then my old one started working... but I'm keeping the new one anyway. I already fell in love. And I'm a sucker for love at first sight.

* Save money for my vacation. Wherever and whenever it may be. It's happening.

Isn't it wonderful how Spring can make you feel like you can make a fresh start? If I were inventing the calendar, I would make New Years happen in the Spring... it's when I'm finally ready to get out and get moving.

What about you? Spring cleaning plans? New goals for the new season?

Happy Spring lovelies!
